Camellia
Sinesis - or Tea to you and me
What's
so special about green tea? In a word, antioxidants.
There
are many teas, but they all come from just one plant called
Camellia Sinesis. It is the differing processing methods which
results in the different tea varieties such as green tea,
oolong tea and black tea. After the leaves are picked, they
are lightly processed to prevent some natural changes taking
place. Light steaming or gentle heat prevents oxidation and
therefore preserves the naturally occurring antioxidants in
green tea.
Extensive
research and studies with green tea have revealed that it
is one of the richest source of antioxidants. The antioxidants
found in green tea are polyphenols which include epicatechi
(EC) epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
Antioxidants
are compounds that help the body detoxify harmful excess free
radicals. These free radicals are molecules which occur in
the body. However, excess amounts caused by smoking, excessive
sunlight exposure, pollution etc., have been associated with
as increased risk of major diseases.
Antioxidants
have the ability to comfort the adverse effects by neutralising
their production and thus protecting cells from the normal,
but damaging physiological process known as oxidative stress.
There
is increasing scientific research taking place highlighting
the benefits of antioxidants in promoting a healthy heart,
prevention of cancer, help assist prevention against diseases
like diabetes, help to maintain normal blood pressure, can
help with digestive problems and even dental decay and more.
