The Bowen Technique - The Gentle Way of Healing

When Michael, a 45-year-old office manager was told to try the Bowen technique for his chronic backache, he was more than sceptical. He had suffered sciatica and a restricted painful shoulder for many years and had tried everything, - from strong painkillers to chiropractors to osteopaths - but nothing worked for him. He had almost resigned himself to be in pain for the rest of his life.

As he had nothing to lose, he arrived for his appointment at the Bowen Wellness clinic at the edge of the New Forest and was pleasantly surprised. He found himself lying on a very comfortable bed and hardly noticed the small precise moves that were made on his body. Indeed he found it so relaxing that he found himself dozing off.

Practitioner Hella Crawford explains that only thumbs and forefingers are being used to roll over specific muscles. These moves are gentle and stimulate the body to initiate self-healing and are interspersed with intentional rest periods, which allow the body to absorb the treatment and start the healing process. This treatment addresses the entire body, allowing it to re-balance.

This wonderful therapy was developed during the 1950s by the Australian, Thomas Bowen, and is now widely used in that country, as well as the USA, Canada, Holland and Britain. Among present day Bowen therapists are osteopaths, chiropractors, sports therapists and physiotherapists. Bowen can be used to offer relief for: long-standing aches and pains, including sciatica, neck, shoulder and back problems, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and sports injuries. Other conditions that have benefited from the Bowen Technique include ME, fibromyalgia, RSI, headaches, migraine, PMT and stress-related conditions.

To come back to Michael. The night after the first treatment he slept very soundly, and gradually with the help of 3 more Bowen treatments his pain subsided. It is now nearly a year after the first session and Michael is still feeling extremely well and is without pain.
